Nikon D3X, Top Dog in Image Quality

Though Nikon has faced sharp criticism for selling its new Nikon D3X at a recession-unfriendly price of US$ 8,000, one group which tests image censor claims the 24.5MP DSLR has the best image quality on the market - by a considerable margin.

According to DxO Labs, the D3X takes the lead on the DxOMark Sensor scale with a 6-point gain above all other camera. The D3X scored an 88 out of 100 for its image quality which is first out of 54 cameras tested.

According to DxOMark's testing, D3x is the first camera which actually achieves more than 12-bit depth of effective image information, and thus is able to take full advantage of its 14-bit Analog/Digital (A/D) converter.

More interestingly, the top three cameras in DxOMark's Image Quality Database are all made by Nikon. In second place, for image quality, is the Nikon D3, which scored an 80.6 out of 100. In third place is the Nikon D700, which scored an 80.5. pdngearguide.com

A Guide for Digital Photography

Digital Photography: The Missing Manual is a new book by New York Times tech columnist David Pogue. In this four-color book Pogue demystifies the art of shooting pictures, editing them, organizing them, and distributing them to audience. It covers both pocket cameras and DSLR models and costs US$24.99.

Part 1, The Camera, is a buying guide, it tells which features are worth looking for, and which are just marketing blather. Part 2, The Shoot, is a course in photography and digital cameras. These chapters cover composition, lighting, shutter speed, aperture, flash, eliminating blur and how your digital camera controls all of these parameters. Chapter 6, in particular features all the classic professional photo types (frozen action, silky-smooth waterfall, car-headlight trails at night, and so on) and tells you precisely how to achieve those effects yourself. This section of the book creates a bridge between everyday snapshots and the kinds of shots you see in magazines and newspapers.

Part 3, The Lab, covers the fundamentals of getting your photos into iPhoto or Picasa, organizing and filing them, searching them, and editing them to compensate for weak lighting. Part 4, The Audience, is all about the payoff. It covers the many ways you can present those photos to other people: as a slideshow, as prints, as a published custom book, as a Web page, as an email attachment, as a slideshow movie that you post on the Web, as a photo gift, and so on. With this new book, David offers plenty of friendly advice to help you join in the fun and get real satisfaction from digital photography. photographyblog.com

French Veteran Photographer, Had No Idea about Technique, Won Awards

Marc Riboud, 85 years old French veteran photographer best known for his 1967 image of a girl - Jane Rose Kasmir - holding a flower in her hand and standing in front of a row of soldiers whose rifles are raised during a U.S. demonstration against the war in Vietnam, won the Sony World Photography Awards. The prize was given at a ceremony in Cannes, southern France, on January 16th.

What became his uniqueness during war was the ability to tell stories from both sides through photographs. He got a taste for adventure and independence while fighting with the French resistance during World War Two, which would serve him well over decades of travel across Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Awkwardly, in the previous time, he had often refused assignments even from the National Geographic because he thought they were too professional.

He believes instinct. A "predisposition" for photography is a key for him. And surprisingly, he insisted, "I had no idea about technique and don't even now." nz.entertainment.yahoo.com

Add Video to your DSLR

Want to be able to shoot video on your DSLR, but don't have the money to buy a Nikon D90 or Canon EOS 5D Mark II? Then some enterprising programmers might have just the (completely unofficial and at your own risk) solution for you. Canon Rumors has linked to a downloadable Russian program (http://valexvir.narod.ru/) that apparently enables video on any Canon DSLR that has Live View. The catch? (of course there's a catch). The camera has to be connected to a computer via the USB port, which then captures the signal from Live View mode and converts it to video. It's not exactly the most portable video camera in the world. Still, it is free (and as we said before, unofficial). photographyblog.com
