Leica M9: the Smallest Full-frame
Camera
The history of 35-mm
photography began almost
100 years ago with the
legendary Ur-Leica. Today, it
is the Leica M9, a landmark
camera that carries the proud
heritage of Leica M cameras
into the digital age. The
Leica M9 is the world's first
digital system camera of its
size to be built with a fullframe
sensor - a CCD sensor
developed specifically for
the M9 - that is capable of
perfectly capturing the full 35-
mm format (24 × 36 mm) in
ultra-high resolution.
The proprietry CCD
sensor in the LEICA M9
with18MP, allows the
utilization of the full 35 mm
format. The sensor of the M9
uses a newly developed cover
glass to eliminate infrared
light contamination and allows
the utilization of existing Leica
M lenses with out a loss of
image quality. The use of external UV/IR filters is not required.
The key control element of the M9 is four-way switch and dial
combination used in conjunction with the 2.5-inch LCD monitor
on the back. All important functions for everyday situations are
quickly and easily accessible by pressing the set button.
With exterior dimensions of 13.9 x 3.7 x 8 cm (5.5 x 1.5
x 3.1 in), it maintains the ideal shape of the M camera and
becomes the smallest full frame system camera in the world.
The camera is available in classic black vulcanit finish or steel
grey with traditional fine leatherette finish. Leica M9 will be
available on September with the price of US$ 6,995. dcviews.com

Till Death Do Photography Apart
Christian Poveda (53), a French-Spanish photographer
who was also the director of a controversial film, La Vida
Loca, was found dead with a bullet on his head inside a car in
Tonacatepeque, a rural area north of San Salvador, El Salvador.
Before he was found, Poveda was coming back from an
assignment among violent street gangs known as the Maras.
The photographer had been working for the past few years
among El Salvador's street gangs, gaining the protection of
their leaders while he documented their lives.
Another photographer, Miquel Dewever-Plana, who was
also Poveda's friend, said that Poveda's death could have
been the work of the police or the military, because what both
Poveda and himself have been documenting is not so much the
violence that emerge from these gangs, but the causes of their
members' marginalization - a breakdown of the family system
and disinterest from the local and central governments.
Another source said that Poveda was probably murdered
by one of the gang member, because in Visa Pour L'Image
festival in Perpignan, France, Poveda wrote in his exhibition
statement, "These gangs of youths are heavily involved in drugs
and arms dealing and have gradually spread across Central
America."
Last year, the photographer explained that he never
feared for his life when working among the Maras. Anyone who
will be convicted of his murder, Poveda's death is the proof of
his total devotion to photography. In a former time, his photos
had been published in Newsweek, New York Times, GEO, Le
Figaro, Paris Match, Stern and other magazines around the
world.

Harinezumi: Analog Experience in a
Digital Camera
Japanese toy camera maker, Superheadz, released its
new and tiny digital camera, namely Harinezumi. Though
this is not likely going to be the first camera you might reach
for on assignment, it is a lot of fun and can produce some
unexpectedly pleasing results because Superheadz had
purposely removed the line-view function. It's tiny LCD on back
only works for playback, so you will not know exactly what you
are capturing - like when you are using an analog camera.
"Happy accidents" or just plain accidents will be a lot of fun.
Some of Harinezumi's features are 2.0-MP CMOS Chip,
recording resolution for still picture of 1,600x1,200 or 320x240,
640x480 AVI video at 25fps, film sensitivity of 100/800, Micro
SD Card up to 2GB (sold separately) and CR2X1 battery (sold
separately). This US$ 170 camera also features an 8mm film
effect without sound which will bring you to experience more on
the analog world. pdngearguide.com, shopping.icp.org

Let the Photos Speak

Photos can definitely tell us so many
stories. Through a photo, those stories from
the past can be revealed. Sharon Collins'
story from the past was going back to her
mind when she saw a photo of an elevator
girl staring at nothing, while at the same
time, pressing an elevator button. Sharon
saw this photo when she was visiting the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 10
years ago.
How could Sharon's past strike her
back when she saw this photo? Well, the
girl that was captured on the photo was
Sharon herself when she was 15 years old
and had Goldstein as her last name. At that
time, she got a summer job as an elevator
girl at the Sherry Frontenac Hotel in Miami
Beach. When she starred at her photo, she
did not know exactly who was taking it, and
moreover, she did not know that she was
captured.
Today, Sharon lives in San Francisco.
She finally knows that the photographer
who took her picture is Robert Frank, and
the photo of her that is entitled as "Elevator - Miami Beach, 1955" is Robert's most
famous work. This photo now becomes
the collection of Philadelphia Museum of
Art. One unique thing that happened half
century after that photo was taken is;
Sharon was recaptured –-by Ian Padgham-–
with almost the same pose - she was
confusedly staring at her own photo in
front of the lift of San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art. npr.org
